Hymnen und Choräle
Romanza was written as a ballad for the composers wife. The first theme is already introduced in the first two bars, with a descending line in the woodwind. After this the chorale-like theme returns in the alto oboe and horn. The theme is then repeated, but this time in a close harmony setting in a minor key. Then comes the second theme, which is extremely melodious. All the parts of the orchestra complement each other in rendering this theme in its entirety. This second theme is the basis on which to launch a development that ultimately reaches a climax based on the last four bars of the first theme, after which the theme returns once more, though this time as a solemnchorale by the brass. The finale of the work is a variant of the beginning, which completes the circle.
