Lola

The solo piece for alto saxophone was written in the first version in 2008 as commissioned composition by Preinfalk's then Professor of Classical Saxophone at the Vienna Music University, now MDW. The piece should contain the current playing techniques of new music as well as rhythm and be enriched with improvisation. With these specifications, Preinfalk has written a composition, that combines all of these ideas in the most organic possible connections – a fascinating conglomeration of melodic overtone playing with a lot of groove!

The composer chose the name after a visit to the theater in Vienna's Josefstadt, where a befriended actress played her first major role: The "Lola" in "Der blaue Engel", a theatrical version of the famous movie classic. The well-known refrain of the song "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt", originally performed by Marlene Dietrich, gave the idea for the first bars of the also "first" solo piece by Gerald Preinfalk.

Das Solostück für Altsaxophon entstand in der ersten Fassung im Jahr 2008 als Auftragskomposition von Preinfalks damaligem Professor für klassisches Saxophon an der Wiener Musikuniversität, heute MDW. Das Stück sollte die heutzutage gängigen Spieltechniken neuer Musik beinhalten sowie mit Rhythmus und Improvisation gespickt sein. Mit diesen Vorgaben hat Preinfalk ein Stück geschrieben, das all diese Ideen in möglichst organischen Verbindungen vereint – entstanden ist ein faszinierendes Konglomerat an melodischen Obertonspielereien mit viel Groove!

Den Namen hat der Komponist nach einem Theaterbesuch im Theater in der Wiener Josefstadt gewählt, wo eine befreundete Schauspielerin ihre erste große Rolle – die „Lola“ im Stück „Der blaue Engel“, einer Theaterversion des berühmten Filmklassikers – spielte. Die allseits bekannte Refrainzeile des Liedes „Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt“, im Original von Marlene Dietrich gesungen, wurde deshalb schemenhaft zum Anfang des ebenfalls „ersten“ Solostücks von Gerald Preinfalk auserkoren.
