op. 71/2
Sebastian Lee was born in Hamburg on 24.12.1805 and died there on 4.1.1887. In his native city he had cello lessons with Johann Nikolaus Prell (1773-1849), a pupil of Bernhard Romberg. From 1837-1843 he was principal cellist at the Paris Opera and then taught at the Paris Conservatoire until 1868. After that he returned to his native city of Hamburg. Lee is known above all for his Cello Method op. 30 and collection of ‘Melodic and Progressive Studies’ op. 31, though he also composed arrangements of popular operatic melodies and a few original pieces for cello and piano. His expressive Berceuse (Lullaby) was published by Schott in 1858 as plate no. 13303.
