Paolo Serrao (Philadelphia, in the province of Catanzaro, April 11, 1830 – Naples, March 17, 1907) probably learned the first musical rudiments, especially the piano technique, from an uncle priest... Florimo writes that in 1852 he left Colleggio and began his artistic career giving piano lessons "in which branch he was very skilled"... From 1860 he taught at the Conservatory of Naples, first occupying the chair of Harmony then, from 1863, the chair of Counterpoint and Composition that he held until the last days of his life. Among his many students of serrao we note the names of: Franco Alfano, Francesco Cilea, Camillo De Nardis, Umberto Giordano, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Alessandro Longo, Giuseppe Martucci, Leopoldo Mugnone, of the two brothers Romaniello Vincenzo and Luigi, Florestano Rossomandi, and many others.
