The Lion Sleeps Tonight was first recorded in 1939 under the title Mbube (African for lion) by the South African composer Solomon Linda and his band The Evening Birds. The version by George David Weiss, Luigi Creatore and Hugo Peretti, which is known today, dates from 1961 and has already been reinterpreted by countless great artists.
