based on the song "Lied van Hertog Jan (Floris van der Putt)"
Concert and Contest Collection CBHA
The name Cambrinus refers to the extravagant John I of Brabant, who was Duke of the Dutch provinces of Brabant and Limburg in the second half of the 13th century. The piece tells the story of this important man and begins with the Battle of Worringen in 1288, at which he won a glorious victory. At the lavish celebration after this triumph, however, he is also said to have thought about the suffering that his soldiers and he caused. This work offers exciting and energetic musical scenes with great impact, but also beautiful romantic and heroic themes in which the orchestra can unfold all its qualities.
