Burn the Church ! is inspired by a dramatic historical episode of the 16th century. The region around Lille, then part of Spanish-ruled Flanders, was shaken by religious conflict and unrest. Protestants, persecuted as heretics and labeled “the wretched,” were brutally oppressed.

In December 1566, violence escalated in nearby Wattrelos, where the persecuted sought refuge in the cemetery and church. The church was set on fire, many lost their lives, while others escaped with local support.
