The motet “The Vanities of Life” op. 30 was written by Miklós Rózsa in 1964 as a commissioned work for the Pacific Lutheran University Choir in Tacoma, Washington. The choir performed the work for the first time in the same year, together with the motet “To Everything There Is a Season” op. 21, composed in 1945, which is also based on a text from the Book of Ecclesiastes.
