The piece was probably written for one of Mozart's pupils, though it was notpublished during his lifetime. It has since come to symbolise in miniature the dominant elements of the Mozart style: clarity, melodic charm, and exquisite balance. These characteristics epitomise the music of the Vienneseclassical period of the late 18th century.
