Carl Haefele was born in Unterheimbach on July 8, 1848, which is located halfway between the cities of Heilbronn and Schwaebisch Hall. On March 4, 1863 Haefele enlisted in the 8th Wuerttemberg Infantry Regiment No. 126 which later was renamed 8th Wuertt. Infantry Regiment No. 126 Grand Duke Frederick of Baden.
