The Hymnu Sardu Nationali was composed by Giovanni Gonella, based on a text by Vittorio Angius, and was performed for the first time in the Civic Theatre of Cagliari on 20 February 1844.

According to Casula, author of the discovery of the original score in the archives of the auditorium of Cagliari, the anthem was always held in great consideration by the sovereigns.
