English composer Edward German was Musical Director of The Globe Theatre in London in 1888 when his incidental music brought his work to the attention of the public. He earned applause for his comic opera, his seriousworks, and his incidental music, of which Orpheus With His Lute is a fine example. It was composed for a production of Shakespeare’s Henry VIII and employs a lilting 3/8 melody to effectively convey themagical power of Orpheus’s music.
