To mark the 400th anniversary of John Dowland’s death, Stephan Mensger has arranged his popular piece – with its self-deprecating title – for the unusual line-up of five violas.
Through the use of dynamic contrasts and octave passages, as well as the homogeneous sound of five identical instruments, this three-part pavane thus acquires a distinct intensity that highlights Dowland’s masterful voice leading in a new way.
